May 30-31 Happy Memorial Day from Alaska

Sunday: We left Talkeetna and stopped by the lodge. Fancy ooo-lala! We sat on the balcony that overlooked the mountain range that includes Denali. Denali was hidden in the clouds, but the mountain range was beautiful. Denali is only seen 30 percent of the time.

Went into the lodge and saw the biggest, scariest grizzly ever! A ten year old girl shot it 32 yards away and the second shot 112 yards away. That bear was a whopping 2000 pounds. It took the hunting party 2 days to skin it and bring it in. I told you these girls are something else.

Made it to Eklutna Lake north of Anchorage by lunch time. We are camping in the woods, but a short walk takes us to a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains on all sides. Defiantly a cereal bowl effect. The green sloops of the mountains and the snow that dusts the top is almost surreal. Such a peaceful place. This is a reservoir that could provide enough water for every Alaskan. It replenishes itself faster than people can use it. Since there is so much dead wood on the beach people have constructed tee-pees to shelter them. I imaging a tarp is thrown around them to keep the sun and wind at bay.

All through the camp are signs about bears. We read this to bring home the point about food.

A needle falls to the ground.

An eagle sees it,,

deer hear it,

and a bear smells it.

This campground is full at the moment and we were blessed to get a site, but tomorrow it empties out as people go back to work.

Evan is in his glory. First fire in Alaska. My Bush man in his environment. The needle doesn't fall far from the tree as we have raised a few bush men too.

We have been unplugged for the most part. I do try to find a place where I can post these blogs and  catch up with my peeps from time to time. I love hearing from them. Friends and family keep tugging at my heart, but I'm enjoying being here and experiencing so many different things.

I don't miss the news and Evan has not even looked at a news feed. We really don't know what's going on in the world and not the least worse off. Evan has slept really well. Maybe it's the fresh air up here because it certainly isn't the mattress on this bed. I'm thinking this trip is going to cost us a lot more than travel expenses. A new mattress will probably be in the works soon. After all, we have slept on the same mattress for 30 years. Hey, no judgement...we bought a really good one all those years ago.

Tonight's dinner was a combination of most leftover foods. Evan said it was the best dinner. We bought pretty much just what we needed. I do not wish to throw away food so I'm being creative as best I can.

Tomorrow after a lazy morning of coffee and breakfast and maybe another fire and walk to the lake we will head down to Eagle Lake. It's a bit closer to Anchorage and a clear reminder to me that this trip is winding down. I'm coming home refreshed and ready for what God has for me. I am eager to open my porch to friends, family and neighbors as summer starts full throttle.  And I want to make that spinach garlic, cheese bread. Look the recipe up. It's called Talkeetna Spinach Cheese Bread.

Alaska is a great place to visit. The dark winters would bother me and quite frankly these long days make me lose track of time. I'm sure the darken blinds are a thing up here. I'm watching people outside wearing shorts, short sleeve t-shirts and flip-flops. Burr! I'm in at least three layers. Temps in the 60's is a heat wave up here. They also make birch syrup. We make maple but Burch's are very plentiful. Buckets hang from many trees along the road.

It's 11:02 Sunday night  (it's still light out)  we were just awaken by an earthquake.  I didn't like that one bit. Our camper rocked back and forth like we were going over deep and long pot-holes. Evan went out and talked to another camper and he said that they have them at least once a year but, "this was a good one". Good one??? For the life of me I can't see the goodness in any earthquake. Took me awhile to get back to sleep.  Found out it was a 6.0 magnitude.

So skip the fire, we're outta here!!!

Since our trip has had some cancellations we are going to leave Wednesday instead of Friday. I just pray we can get a ride home. I'll work on that even if it's an Uber.

I love you all!😍😍😍😍😍

May 30 Talkeetna, Alaska and just thoughts

Today, we are in a holding pattern. Due to the snow we won't be able to drive the Denali Highway which would have taken 2-3 days to cross. We have decided (well actually Evan decided, I was kind of against it) to take a small plane to fly over Denali tomorrow.  It should be a better day weather wise. Honestly, I'm really not that keen on flying so this is a stretch for my comfort zone. Just FYI...today, Sunday is 10 degrees warmer up here then in Manchester. But, I've heard it's been hot.

Today the sun sets at 11:30 pm and rises  tomorrow at 4:24. Evan is sleeping with blinders on and I just close my eyes; it's quite efficient at keeping the light out. God thought of everything when he created man. Eyelashes, eyebrows and eyelids all serve a purpose. Gosh, you gotta stop and do some wondering sometimes.

This trip has had all the feels for me. Sometimes I think as we sleep in these remote places that we will be harmed and robbed as we sleep.. They truly are quite imposing and lonely. I guess I've lived near one of the crime capitals of the world for too long. Not all people are out to get us. When we ask the Alaskan people about it they say everyone does it and it's not a problem. The people up here couldn't be more friendly and kind. We just love talking to the people we meet and finding out their stories of how they came to live up here. So many times they came up to do a job and just decided to stay. Makes me wonder what their back story is, but I feel it would be rude to ask such probing questions.

Seeing the sunlight shine on these mountains is nothing short of breathtaking. We have camped in some really beautiful places and I'm really grateful for this opportunity, but I'm a 10 day girl. There I said it. I am totally out of my routine but I super enjoy seeing new places, but 10 days is my sweet spot. I'm also grateful I am content with the life I have. I so enjoy my family, my friends and my home. I am asking God to help me enjoy these days and to open my eyes to the things around me.

The Alaska Railroad train goes right behind where we are camping.

Sometimes we just need to know when to jump off the track and truly experience life. For 10 days at least. Evan and I want to use this down time to ask God what he wants us to do with our lives. We both know that pouring our lives into others is one of the keys to joy and happiness. Yet, to often we live our lives so small, so calculating we lose the wonder and magic of life. And truly God's greatest blessings. I hope i don't sound like I'm grumbling because I'm not really; I'm just thinking as a #2 thinks. I'm a feeler.

Last minute change of plans. We will not be flying tomorrow because we couldn't answer a question they asked about covid in the manner they wanted so they asked us not to fly.

Leaving Talkeetna and heading towards Anchorage. There is a beautiful lake. where we will stay.

Love you all!

Talkeetna at the base of Denali

The road out of Valdez was breathtaking. Stopped on the other side of the pass and was met with snow. We stopped around 9:30 (still light)

Our camping for the night spot. Leaving Valdez we headed over the Thompson Pass. It is the snowiest part of Alaska from what the locals tell us.

Woke up at 5:30, made a coffee and peanut butter crackers and a banana. Onto Talkeetna we go! It's above Anchorage and at the base of Denali. Talkeetna is the jumping off place where climber begin their accent to Denali. Crazy people!!!

Try not to see the phone pole and look beyond it to see God's handiwork it's breathtaking.

Drove into Talkeetna at noon and walked through the town. If you walk to fast you'll miss it entirely. But, I got a new recipe to try. It's Spinach cheese bread and they are selling it as fast as they can bake it. A 5 inch square is $8. It would make a great appetizer, so it's coming your way family.
Evan strolling in town. It is a very quaint town and we enjoyed walking through. It was about a quarter mile from our camping site.
Dinner is chicken bites in a spice I'll mix up, buttered noodles and salad and fruit. We are eating quite well in our camper.

These people!
Miss them all.

Love and kisses!

Still in Valdez May 28 Making the most of a washout day

It's a rainy day here in Valdez, but we got new raincoats before we left so we will put them to the test today. Actually looking forward to the museum and fish hatchery today. We can walk to the museum, but we need to drive to the hatchery. We might do that tomorrow on our way out. We decided to leave tomorrow to get to better weather. Gonna rain here tomorrow all day as well.

Walked over to the cutest, best smelling Coffee shop in Valdez and took a walk around the harbor.

Oh, by the way our raincoats have proven to be as advertised. Waterproof! However, my shoes not so much!

Today is a down and relax day. I have a book I started and I'm going to read and we are going out to dinner tonight. We can walk there as well. Right now I have a date with Charles Martin.

Visiting the Valdez Museum and learning about the pipeline, the 1962 earthquake tsunami and the Exxon Valdez spill.
On this rainy day Evan has chosen the living room, I'm in the dining room/kitchen and we are reading and enjoying the rainfall sounds on the roof of the camper.
Never thought I would see the day that my husband could not eat a pizza. We went out to dinner tonight and had THE worst pizza we have ever had. After all this is fish country not pizza. But honestly the pie had NO flavor. We had it boxed up and on the way back to the camper found a dumpster and chucked it in.

All is good though. We are getting ready to pull out. It's a tad bit warmer now then in the morning. It's 5:30 pm now and it stays light until 11 so we are out of Valdez.
Love you all! πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—OXOX

May 27 Valdez, E-Bikes and chilling after a long travel day yesterday

Today we arrived in Valdez. We spent the night alongside the road in a nice wide pull off right beside a waterfall. We slept with the soothing sound of the water falling and the swift stream that it fed. So many blessings to share about yesterday.

This may not seem like a big deal to all, but from day 1 here in Alaska we have been on the lookout for a State Trooper. We had a request before we left home to see if we could get anAlaskan State Trooper badge.  We thought we missed an opportunity while in Seward as we drove past one, but didn't stop. We were kicking ourselves.

You know where it says in Eph. 3:20 that "God can accomplish infinitely more than we could we ask or imagine"? A small prayer from a mother's heart took us right to a State Troopers Station right near where we got gas as we were leaving the Kenai Peninsula. Evan and I walked in and spoke to the lady at the window. We gave her our request and she walked back in the office. When she came back she opened a closet and handed us Trooper badges that were taken off the uniforms of other officers. One for each of our first responders. I literally cried as we walked out because just moments earlier we prayed that God would show us favor and allow us to get one. I wanted just one, but God gave us more.  So here's to you my first responder or two. And a huge thank you to God who cares about such details and blesses us so much.

Today, we rented some e-bikes to travel around town. It is supposed to rain later today so we are taking advantage of being outside when we can.

Down a dirt road in the middle of wild Alaska! It was the BEST time exploring outside Valdez.
This flat is running with glacier water. it is blue/green and milky with mineral deposits.
Evan beside the glacier stream.
I was wearing 5 layers and my pouch under all the layers. It was cold
Just found out the place we were going tomorrow or Saturday is supposed to get 6" of snow, so I guess Evan and I need to change our plans. We are going to work on that tonight.A little bonus though since we are staying here for a day longer or more we will be treated to an airshow.

Backing up to yesterday we drove from Homer to Valdez. A long day of travel, but the views were keeping us interested as we traveled down. Saw this glacier and a moose along the side of the road. They are big, just like everything else in Alaska. The snow is melting off the mountains so there are many waterfalls cascading down making the views spectacular.

Our moose one morning.

Valdez, Alaska

The Harbor

So we are here for a few days and I'm ok with that. These Alaskans are real friendly people. Tomorrow we are going to the fish hatchery and the Valdez Museum. We will learn all about this place we are calling home for a few days.

Love you all πŸ’”πŸ’–πŸ’—

May 25 continued: Bush plane and a walk in an Alaskan woods

We flew over to Soldonia ( Russian for Herring Bay) via a 1969 Cessna at 10:10 this morning. Great flight and our pilot was a female! I love it! Strong capable women up here in Alaska. It was a beautiful day. Rather warm and a slight breeze.

As I got in the plane I was not to comfortable with the airplane itself. Kinda rusty and banged up, but it flew fine which is the main thing I guess. In all fairness we flew in a cargo bush plane. These planes are workhorses up here bringing supplies and Amazon packages to the remote parts of the state. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done.

Stopped in a sweet coffee shop and they had all kinds of homemade breads. The owner employes a wonderful baker and she can really make a nice cinnamon bun. She also makes all the bread and rolls. I was chatting with her asking how she made the croissants cuz I know they take a lot of time. She played around with the recipe and found a shortcut!  Learned she has a confessed passion for baking. They are so blessed to have her. Evan and I both got a coffee and we split the bun. Everything is big in Alaska. After that we took a walk about a mile away to the beach.

It was a walk through the woods.

And the path spilled out onto this beautiful beach. Not the kind you can throw a towel on and sunbathe. Rocks of all sizes fill the "beach". However, beautiful nonetheless for sure. Minus the crowds too!

A cozy cabin in Soldonia.

Here is where I got my Halibut. It was so delicious. Very few times I get a meal out this good. Whenever we asked people where to get a good Halibut they ALL say Captain Pattie's.  Dag-one if they weren't right. Just ask the locals and they will tell you straight!

Some pics from Soldonia. Population about 200. Yikes!!! That's a little to small for me.

That's all for now, and it may be a couple of days before I get a chance to post. Tomorrow we are driving up towards Anchorage and taking a road towards Valdez. Most likely we will be in the boonies with no wifi.
Love you all! πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–
