NO snow and the Great Sand Dunes

It's still only 30 some degrees, but we did not have snow. Coming out of the campsite this morning we were greeted with the most stunning view just across the road. The mountains are just so magnificent. One feels so small here. The total vastness of this higher plane is just difficult to put your head around.

Off to the Great Sand Dunes for the day.

This picture does not do it justice. There are 330 square miles of sand! In the summer the sand gets 150 degrees. So thankful we went now. As we got rather close to the park we saw the mountains change color to a tan, brown. It was literally mountains of sand! SAND, in the middle of the mountains. Heck! God probably said when he was creating the earth, "The seashore has enough sand, I think I'll dump the rest at the bottom of the mountains in Colorado. That way my beloved will scratch their heads and perhaps think of me." Where? Why? When?

We thoroughly enjoyed walking up the dunes. I was looking at all the colorful stones in the sand and collected the extra pretty ones like I collect sea shells at Sanibel.

The drive back was beautiful. The mountains were snow capped and when the afternoon sun shone on them we had to stop the car and drink in their beauty. Unfortunately, pictures do not do them justice. After a stop at a grocery store to get more provisions we gave the truck a wash and came "home".

It is now 60 degrees and we are getting things ready to leave in the morning. After a simple dinner of grilled cheese and tomato soup, we will begin our evening routine. A couple card games, reading, shower and bed. It was a really great day!

One thing about this part of Colorado, it's vast. Miles and miles between mountains on either side. We wondered where the children go to school and wonder how long their bus ride must be.

On to Gunnison in the morning. Lord willing. Love to all who share in this journey via this blog. I LOVE you.

Mountains of sand, people would bring their sleds, walk up the mountain (over and hours hike) and sled down. I'm so glad the National park allows people to really enjoy the hills of sand. You know most people who live here never have seen the beach. What a treasure we East Coasters have to live so close.

The big open sky is one of my favorite things about Colorado. Seeing the mountains is just epic.
